ROTAN ED vs Mechanical Seal: Choosing an Internal Gear Pump

Choose ROTAN ED when leakage at a rotating shaft seal is unacceptable and the liquid and duty suit a magnetic coupling. Consider a mechanically sealed ROTAN configuration when seal maintenance is manageable or the duty does not suit ED. Confirm the exact pump, materials and operating point before ordering.

How do the two designs differ?

ROTAN EDMechanically sealed ROTAN
A magnetic coupling transmits torque through a containment shell, removing the conventional shaft seal to atmosphere. It reduces seal-leakage exposure but still needs compatible liquid and adequate internal lubrication.A shaft seal contains liquid where the driven shaft exits the casing. Seal type and support arrangement can be tailored, but sealing faces and auxiliary systems require inspection and service.

Which duty limits decide the choice?

Containment is only one selection factor. Check fluid chemistry against every wetted material, bearing and elastomer. Review viscosity at start-up and operating temperature, flow, differential pressure, motor and coupling torque. Solids, poor suction, dry running and overheating can rule out a proposed configuration. A positive-displacement gear pump also needs properly engineered overpressure protection.

What should the RFQ include?

Send a complete duty sheet so DFIN can compare ED with an appropriate sealed ROTAN option:

  • Liquid composition, concentration, solids, viscosity at both temperatures and required containment level.
  • Required flow, suction conditions, normal and maximum differential pressure, temperature range and operating schedule.
  • Existing nameplate or series, materials, available power, seal or coupling preference and any site certification requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is ROTAN ED suitable for every hazardous liquid?

No. Magnetic drive addresses the conventional shaft-seal leak path; chemical compatibility, bearing lubrication, torque, temperature and site requirements still need review.

Is a magnetic-drive pump always cheaper to own?

No. Compare purchase cost with seal support, service frequency, downtime and fluid-loss consequences for the actual duty. Ask for a configuration-specific quotation.
