Flygt N-Pump Low Flow: Check Clogging and System Faults

If a Flygt N-pump runs but delivers too little wastewater, first compare the actual flow and head with its recorded duty point. A partial hydraulic blockage is possible, but low wet-well level, a closed valve, a blocked discharge or a control fault can look similar. Do not order an impeller from the symptom alone.

What evidence suggests a blockage?

A longer emptying time, changing motor current, repeated trips or a new vibration after a solids event warrants inspection. These signs are not a diagnosis. Record the wet-well level, running current, flow or drawdown time, discharge pressure and alarm history.

What should be checked first?

  1. Stop and electrically isolate the pump; secure the wet well and follow the exact Flygt model manual and site confined-space rules before any access.
  2. Check level sensors, valve positions, check valve, discharge line and any upstream screen. Confirm the pump is seated correctly on its discharge connection and compare the operating point with the selected curve.
  3. If system checks do not explain the loss, have qualified staff lift and inspect the inlet, impeller and volute for rags, grit, damage or excessive clearance. Use the model manual for cleaning, setting clearances and restart; never reach into an energized pump.

Clog or another system fault?

A partial clog may reduce flow while the pump still runs. A discharge restriction or incorrect level control can do the same. Recheck flow, head and current after a safe cleaning or system correction; persistent loss calls for inspection of wear, rotation and the original selection.

What should a parts RFQ include?

Send the complete Flygt designation, serial number and impeller code, photos of the nameplate and damaged parts, liquid and solids description, installation type, measured flow/head, current, alarms and inspection findings. Match impeller and wear parts to the exact hydraulic version; price depends on the confirmed configuration and scope.

Frequently asked questions

Does N-technology mean a pump can never clog?

No. Its self-cleaning hydraulics reduce common solids build-up, but unusual debris, wear or system problems still require diagnosis.

Should I replace the impeller whenever flow falls?

No. Verify valves, piping, control and duty point first; replace parts only after inspection and part-number confirmation.
