A frozen AODD muffler can restrict exhaust air and slow or stop the pump. Check moisture in the compressed-air supply, air treatment and the exhaust path before ordering an air kit or replacement muffler.
Why does an AODD muffler freeze?
Compressed air cools as it expands through the exhaust. Moisture can freeze at the muffler or in the air distribution path, especially with humid air and frequent cycling. Visible frost is a useful clue, but it does not by itself identify a failed air valve.
How should you diagnose the fault?
Record whether slowing follows humid operation and whether the pump restarts after warming. A blocked muffler can also contain dirt rather than ice; low pressure at the pump may instead reflect an undersized or restricted air supply.
- Isolate and depressurize both air and liquid lines before opening or removing a component. Photograph frost, the nameplate and the installed muffler.
- Inspect the muffler and exhaust passage for ice or debris. Check filter drains and dryer service, then measure pressure at the pump inlet while it cycles.
- If process liquid appears at the air exhaust, stop the pump and inspect the diaphragm according to the model-specific manual.
How can repeat icing be prevented?
- Drain and service air filters and dryers, confirm air quality at the pump, and keep the exhaust path clear. Review air pressure and cycle rate against the real duty.
- Use only a manufacturer-approved remote exhaust or heater arrangement where needed. Do not restrict the exhaust or run without a muffler without assessing noise, contamination and site safety.
What should a replacement-parts RFQ include?
Send the complete pump model, serial number or revision, current muffler code, photos, air conditions and symptom history. A similar-looking part is not proof of compatibility. Ask DFIN to verify the exact item and quote against the installed configuration.
